Ideal av Kristiansund
Price: Price on request.
Her forebears are the fast-sailing schooners that Skaalurens Skibsbyggeri in Rosendal built between 1903 and 1910 for the clipfish trade to Newfoundland, the Mediterranean and South America. The original Ideal of 1903 was one of them. The current owners have been running the project from the start and were responsible for her construction at Saltkaia in Kristiansund. Her lines are taken from Rosenheim (1910), the last schooner built by the yard, and adapted to today’s strength requirements. Ideal was launched in 2016.
The hull is built with glued laminated frames and Norwegian pine planking, and the deck is laid in pine with oak covering boards. Each mast was seasoned and treated with linseed oil for three to five years before being hand-planed and stepped, and the interior is finished in pine, ash and oak. Ideal is built to sail the North Atlantic all year round. She carries 11 sails with about 600 m² of canvas and some 4,000 m of modern rope with the look of traditional hemp. She normally makes 10 knots under sail, with a top speed of 14 knots. Her main engine is a 450 hp Scania. Ten water-borne radiators, heated by the main engine’s cooling water and an oil-fired boiler on the same circuit, keep her comfortable in winter as well as summer.
The heart of the vessel is the saloon amidships, with four long tables around a stove and seating for up to 45. Forward of the saloon are nine passenger cabins and the forepeak. Aft are the galley, crew cabins and the skipper’s cabin. All mattresses and bedding are fire-certified.

History
-
Between 1903 and 1910, Skaalurens Skibsbyggeri in Rosendal built a series of fast-sailing schooners under master shipbuilder Knut Skaaluren. They were built for Norwegian owners, among them Johan T. Østbø of Hundvåg, and carried klippfisk and salted fish between Norway, Newfoundland, Europe and South America. The original Ideal of 1903 sailed to the Mediterranean, Newfoundland and Brazil. After a hurricane in the North Atlantic, she limped badly damaged into Ponta Delgada in the Azores and then completed her voyage. In 1914 she was sold to Duke Ernst II of Saxe-Altenburg.
The yard’s drawings are preserved in the archives of Kvinnherad municipality. They formed the basis for new construction drawings, adapted to today’s strength requirements. The lines come from Rosenheim (1910), the last schooner built by the yard. The rig is also based on Rosenheim’s sail plan but was built as a fore-and-aft schooner. The builders also dived on the wreck of her sister ship Elin in Voldafjorden to document details.
The keel was laid in March 2013 in a building shed at Saltkaia, in the centre of Kristiansund. The keel timbers were felled in Hedmark and lay in salt water for a year before being towed 300 nautical miles to Kristiansund. The ballast keel was welded from steel girders salvaged from the old Nordsund Bridge and filled with ballast and concrete. The 62 laminated frames were glued at Bremsnes Båtbyggeri from about 40 tonnes of pine from Østerdalen, dried to below 12 per cent moisture content. The planking is fastened with 750 through-bolts. The deck is 80 mm pine with oak covering boards, and some 2.5 km of seams have been routed and payed.
Masts and spars of Norwegian pine were seasoned for several years and planed by hand. The fittings were hand-forged, and more than 150 blocks were made within the project. The interior is built in oak, ash and elm. Ideal was launched on 31 May 2016 by heavy lift from Ulstein Verft. During construction, some 40,000 people visited the building site.

Varnished deckhouses with brass portholes lead below. A long table seats 10–12 on deck. The rig is worked traditionally with wooden blocks and belaying pins. Hydraulic windlass forward, classic spoked wheel and binnacle aft, Brig tender in davits.
The saloon amidships is the heart of Ideal. A mast rises through the room, with a wood-burning stove at its foot and four long tables with settees around it. Exposed beams, bookshelves and pendant lamps give a warm, classic character.
The galley opens onto the saloon, with a four-burner cooker and oven, double stainless sink, extractor hood and solid wood cabinetry. A serving counter and built-in top-loading fridge sit outside, with clever stowage beneath floor and benches.
Eight guest cabins forward of the saloon, each with a 120 cm lower berth and a single upper berth in solid oak, plus a four-berth forepeak cabin. Several have washbasins. Two toilets and two showers along the corridor. Exposed frames and beams throughout.
The captain’s cabin lies aft, adjacent to the wheelhouse. A mast rises through the cabin, finished in pine and oak with bookshelves and portholes. Double berth, single berth with drawers and a safe beneath, reading lights and private toilet.
The wheelhouse lies aft, reached through panelled doors from the deck, and is finished in pine with exposed beams and portholes. Navigation is by Furuno radar on an ISIC display, with Furuno echo sounder, GPS and AIS, and a Simrad rudder angle indicator.
Below and adjoining the wheelhouse are three separate compartments: the engine room, a generator room and a boiler room.
